Frequently Asked Questions

The Emmett is the result of years of development to create a portable chair designed from the ground up for how we live today in the modern outdoors. In terms of design, quality, comfort, materials and features it's like nothing you've seen before.

See here for a more detailed comparison to a regular camping chair.

Check out opening and folding instructions here.

The chair unfolds by pulling the arms down and away from each other until the arms are locked and the siderails are fully down at the front.

To fold the chair, first use the buttons on the arms to unlock the arms, and then fold the arms up and towards each other.

The weight capacity of the True Places Emmett Portable Chair is 300 pounds.

We designed the Emmett as a real piece of furniture and to be comfortable for most people from 5'1" to 7'1". Note: the seat is a regular chair width, not an extra-wide seat. If you are looking for an extra-wide seat this may not be the ideal chair for you.

The size when open is 36" tall (chair feet to top of the chair back), 24" wide (from outer edges of armrests; the seating area is 18" wide), and 20" deep. The height of the chair seat to the ground is 18". When folded, the chair is 36" tall, 9" wide, and 8" deep.

The chair weighs 10.9 pounds.

The True Places Emmett Portable Chair uses new, patented folding technology designed to create an ultra-comfy seat that stays taut — no more sagging or pinching — while still being able to fold compactly for easy carrying. It also has the profile of a real chair with rigid arms and optimal ergonomic angles.

The Emmett also features our custom TrueFlexTM outdoor fabric which is soft, strong, flexible, breathable, quick-drying and UV-resistant.

Each chair has a “serialized” (i.e. unique to that individual chair) QR code on the back. Simply scan the code with your phone camera to open a link to register your chair to you. Once the chair is linked to you, friends can scan the QR code on your chair to get a discount on their first chair purchase (and we'll make a charitable donation in your honor!), and if you lose your chair someone who finds it can leave you a message.

See here for more information on our refer-a-friend program.

We called the first True Places product the Emmett Chair because Emmett means truth in Hebrew, and is also the name of one of our founder’s pooches - a very truthful Cavalier King Charles Spaniel!

We do not recommend heavy usage at the beach (at least sandy beaches!) More specifically, heavy exposure to sand in and around the folding mechanism and locking system may make the chair difficult to open and close.

If it does get a little sand or salt water on it, just rinse with fresh water and allow to air dry. We built the Emmett to last and with the highest quality materials for most situations, but be aware the folding design was not intended for primary use in sand and salt water.

We designed our first folding chair for so many other outdoor locations: in your backyard, around the firepit, at the park, on the sidelines, at a tailgate with friends...the list goes on!

The chair should be dried and stored in the included protective carrying bag when not in use. Do not leave chair outside permanently (for weeks or longer).

We designed the Emmett to last with little to no additional maintenance.

Our TrueFlex™ fabric is weather and stain-resistant. Any spills can easily be cleaned with a damp soft cloth.

Do not spray or apply any fabric protectors (such as ScotchGuard™ or Guardsman®) to the chair as they can damage and deteriorate the weatherproof TrueFlex™ chair fabric.
